Overview

喜悦居Hay Yue Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Oakland at 337 8th St, offers an authentic taste of Hong Kong–style Chinese cuisine that resonates deeply with classic Cantonese flavors. This modest spot, beloved by local patrons, especially the elder Chinese community, reflects the charm of a traditional "hole-in-the-wall" eatery where quality and authenticity take precedence over modern décor or upscale ambiance.

The culinary focus here centers on beloved staples such as Beef Chow Fun and the House Special Pan Fried Noodle Combination 招牌煎面, each dish echoing the rich, savory essence synonymous with Hong Kong's casual dining scene. The Friday Special Curry Chicken Steak stands out as a comforting choice, blending bold spices with tender meat, while Sweet and Sour Pork delivers that nostalgic, balanced tang cherished by many. For seafood lovers, the menu offers well-executed options like Stir Fried Shrimp in XO sauce and Honey Walnut Prawns, highlighting freshness and vibrant flavors.

The restaurant thrives in delivering satisfying portions that honor tradition, making it an ideal spot for those craving genuine Cantonese fare without the fuss. The environment is straightforward—clean but understated—with a focus more on the food and communal dining experience than on aesthetic flourishes. Service here is friendly, if informal, mirroring the laid-back and homey atmosphere of East Asian neighborhood cafés.

Lunch specials offer a practical way to experience a variety of authentic dishes paired with classic Hong Kong tea options, catering well to office workers, families, and longtime residents seeking value and familiarity. While parking might require some patience, the overall experience, characterized by hearty portions and warm hospitality, compels many to return.

喜悦居Hay Yue Restaurant is a dependable destination for anyone wanting a slice of genuine Hong Kong street-side dining in the Bay Area. It welcomes both newcomers eager to explore Cantonese cuisine and the local community in search of comfort and tradition wrapped up in every bite.

A "hole-in-the-wall" Hong Kong style cafe that can steal my heart any day. The place is frequented with the local elderly Chinese patrons so that means 2 things: 1) the food is a great taste Hong-Kong style classic meals (beef chow fun, baked pork chop rice, you know the deal) 2) the prices are cheap ($6-$10 are you kidding me?) Yes, the place is cash only so do come prepared. As mentioned, this cafe is shabbier in interior decor. Manage your expectations with that and the service, which you shouldn't have too high of a standard for, especially with some language barrier. They have special lunch specials with different dishes on each day of the week. ($6.15 includes a HK tea, which can be upgraded to a milk tea or any other of their cold drinks for .50 cents more) I had the baked porkchop for $6.05 during their lunch hours (11am-3pm). The porkchop was juicy and tender, the sauce flavorful, and a hefty portion. I left quite happy. Parking can be difficult around here but usually there should be metered spots a block or two nearby. I'll be back.

Brand new restaraunt, authentic food as you would find in east Asia. Fresh and large portions. Clean new space, nice service. Prices moderate, fair for this level of quality. Second time here, new menu.

Authentic Cantonese food, great value and most of all great service. We had clay pot rice and they make their own preserved meats. The restaurant looks clean for Chinatown so it’s worth a try.

Very popular place in Chinatown, especially during lunch. This is my in laws go to place because it's cheap, tasty, and they give huge portions. Decor/cleanliness is about average for the price.

About as authentic of a menu as I’ve seen in the US. Amazing prices and large servings. Have been twice already and going a lot more.
